The Battle of Vimy Ridge

By Jim Dyer

A 100 years ago across the great ocean
a ridge called Vimy proved their devotion
to King and country, with freedom the cause
after three years of war that saw no pause
From across the land brave lads did come
All with one purpose no matter where from

Oh Canada – how they stood on guard for thee
They were the pride of the whole western side
Those Canadian boys who stormed Vimy

Brought together in one Canadian Corps
On April 9th it was Canada’s war
The French and the Brits thought it couldn’t be done
No one knew how to drive off the Hun
But a detailed plan that left nothing to chance
had a creeping barrage and a steady advance
By the end of the day from the ridge they could look
It was only then that they knew what they took

But every man knew going over the top
If his buddy went down he wasn’t to stop
So let’s not forget the price that they paid
Four thousand dead in French soil were laid
It made us a nation was the popular refrain
But the next generation faced it all again

Oh Canada – how they stood on guard for thee
They were the pride of the whole western side
Those Canadian boys who stormed Vimy
