Awareness Programs

The Vimy Foundation has seen some impressive growth since 2007, an evolution that has created opportunities for new activities to help spread the organization’s message.

  • Vimy: Canada's Coming of Age at EWC

"Vimy: Canada's Coming of Age" at Encounters with Canada is an in-depth look at Canada’s participation in the First World War, with seminars or debates on the Canadian Corps, the capture of Vimy Ridge, Canada’s 100 Days, the conscription crisis and the home front, Canada’s new identity following the First World War and the legacy of Vimy. Currently scheduled for April 4-10, 2010, over 125 youth aged 14-17 from every corner of Canada will travel to Ottawa to take part in this remarkable opportunity to learn more about Vimy Ridge.

  • The Vimy Pin

The Vimy Pin has been described as “April’s Poppy” by the National Post newspaper. It is the Foundation’s goal that people wear the pin every Vimy Ridge Day in remembrance of that outstanding victory on April 9, 1917, and in recognition of that event’s contribution to the Canadian identity.

  • The Vimy Pilgrimage Medal

To salute Canadian youth for making the pilgrimage to the Vimy Memorial on April 9, 2007 for the 90th anniversary celebrations, the Vimy Foundation awarded each student a medal similar to that given in 1936 to the original pilgrims: First World War veterans attending the original inauguration.

  • The Beaverbrook Vimy Prize

The Beaverbrook Vimy Prize competition is the Foundation’s flagship program. Providing young students with a historical perspective second to none, the annual scholarship brings together youth from Canada, the United Kingdom and France, so that they can better appreciate the intertwined history of their three nations and come to understand the bravery and sacrifice of war.

  • School Remembrance Projects

The Vimy Foundation is facilitating Remembrance-based projects between Canadian and French schools to promote intercultural awareness, language skills, shared history and the value of Remembrance.

  • Remembering Vimy Newsletter

In April 2009, the Vimy Foundation launched Remembering Vimy, the official newsletter of the Vimy Foundation. This new publication is designed specifically to keep current donors and sponsors, as well as partners and prospective contributors, abreast of the most up-to-date initiatives of the Foundation.

  • 100th Anniversary Commemorations

April 9, 2017 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Arras and capture of Vimy Ridge by the Canadian Corps. The Vimy Foundation is working to make this date an international commemoration with events across Canada and in the north of France.
